Tourist Places 2: Quiz

Macchu Picchu

Tourist attractions have always been an important thing in people's lives, because there is a lot of history behind those amazing places.

Macchu Picchu was discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, and it is one the most visited places in South America, Peru. Macchu Picchu is the preferred tourist destination in Peru and one of the most important ruins on the planet due to its history. In fact, this phenomenal place was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by Unesco in 1983, and also it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.

It is believed that this area was inhabited by neighboring populations such as the ayllus of Vilcabamba and the Sacred Valley of the Incas before Macchu Picchu was built. However, these territories became part of the growing empire of Tahuantinsuyo, right after the expansion of the Inca empire. This Inca city was built for the purpose of being a place of worship and a religious sanctuary and it was an important urban and religious center.

Macchu Picchu has more than 150 buildings ranging from houses to temples. The most important temple in Macchu Picchu is the Temple of the Moon, it was built on top of Hauyna Picchu, in a natural cavern and it has a really nice work on Stone.

There were around 300 to 1000 inhabitants in the city. More than 1.5 million tourists visit this Inca city every year. We still don't know how they built this city, because the stones that were used to build it were more than 50 pounds and there were not heavy machines to transport these rocks up the mountain, and also the structures were built very perfectly, the stones were cut to fit together (without using mortars) that not even a knife blade can fit in between these stones.
